MICROBIAL SAVIOURS: THE STORY OF STREPTOMYCES

Abstract

The discovery of antibiotics remains one of the most transformative milestones in the history of medicine, fundamentally reshaping human survival against infectious diseases. Among the microorganisms responsible for this revolution, the genus Streptomyces occupies a dominant and irreplaceable position. These filamentous, Gram-positive soil bacteria are prolific producers of biologically active secondary metabolites, including antibiotics, antifungals, anticancer agents, immunosuppressants, and enzyme inhibitors. This narrative review explores the historical development, biological uniqueness, ecological relevance, and pharmaceutical importance of Streptomyces, emphasizing their central role as microbial saviours. The review highlights the discovery of streptomycin, which marked the beginning of the antibiotic era, and traces the evolution of natural product drug discovery from soil screening to modern genome mining approaches. It also examines the ecological function of Streptomyces in nutrient cycling, plant health, and soil ecosystem stability. Furthermore, the review discusses emerging challenges such as antimicrobial resistance and rediscovery of known compounds, which threaten antibiotic innovation. Recent advances in synthetic biology, metagenomics, and artificial intelligence have revived global interest in Streptomyces as a source of novel therapeutic compounds. Despite decades of research, these organisms continue to reveal hidden biosynthetic potential encoded within silent gene clusters. This review concludes that Streptomyces remain one of nature’s most valuable microbial resources and will continue to play a critical role in future drug discovery and global health protection (Ser et al., 2022; Rutledge and Challis, 2015).
